Te Hono Taone
Reconnecting Community Through Performance
Te Hono Taone, meaning "The Urban Connection," is a contemporary performing arts centre located in the heart of Panmure, Tāmaki Makaurau. Positioned on an underutilised car park adjacent to Queens Road, the project reimagines the site as a vibrant civic destination that strengthens the relationship between community, culture, and the public realm. More than a venue for performance, the proposal positions architecture as a catalyst for urban regeneration, creating spaces that encourage gathering, creativity, learning, and everyday social interaction.
The design process was grounded in extensive site analysis, allowing environmental and urban conditions to inform every architectural decision. Studies of sun path, prevailing winds, acoustics, ecology, circulation, and the wider urban fabric revealed opportunities to improve pedestrian connectivity, increase biodiversity, and strengthen Panmure's cultural identity. Rather than imposing a building onto the site, the proposal responds directly to these findings, shaping both the orientation of the building and its relationship with the surrounding landscape.
At the heart of the project is the idea of connection, between people and place, performance and community, and the built and natural environments. The building is organised around a central public spine that links performance spaces, rehearsal studios, exhibition areas, workshops, and outdoor gathering places. This layered programme encourages interaction beyond scheduled performances, transforming the performing arts centre into an active civic hub throughout the day. Public entrances align with key pedestrian routes, while the auditorium is strategically positioned to optimise acoustic performance and create a welcoming threshold into the building.
Environmental responsiveness became a defining aspect of the design. Natural ventilation, passive solar orientation, daylight optimisation, and carefully positioned glazing reduce energy demand while enhancing occupant comfort. A proposed green corridor extends through the site and along Queens Road, integrating native planting, rain gardens, shaded walkways, and permeable landscapes to reconnect fragmented ecological systems and improve the experience of moving through the precinct. Rather than treating landscape as a secondary element, ecology becomes an active piece of civic infrastructure, supporting biodiversity, mitigating urban heat, and strengthening the relationship between architecture and the natural environment.
The project was informed by the work of OMA, whose approach to civic architecture and urban programming demonstrated how buildings can become catalysts for public life, and Francis Kéré, whose human-centred philosophy and passive environmental strategies reinforced the importance of designing with both community and climate in mind. Together, these precedents shaped an architectural response that balances bold civic presence with environmental sensitivity and social responsibility.
Te Hono Taone represents my transition into architectural design and reflects my growing interest in creating buildings that extend beyond function to strengthen communities and enrich everyday urban life. Through a careful balance of environmental analysis, contextual research, and human-centred design, the project proposes a performing arts centre that reconnects Panmure through architecture, landscape, and the shared experience of performance.

Te Umu Wairua
The Hearth of the Spirit
Te Umu Wairua is my final-year capstone project and represents the culmination of three years of exploring atmosphere, materiality, ritual, and storytelling through spatial design. Situated on Broadway in Newmarket, the proposal reimagines the contemporary gallery as an immersive installation where architecture becomes a vessel for memory, reflection, and wairua. Rather than creating a building to simply display art, I sought to design an experience in which the architecture itself becomes the primary medium of expression.
The project investigates the relationship between the visible and the unseen through a carefully choreographed sequence of light, shadow, and material. Anamorphic concrete panels transform the building's façade into a shifting narrative, revealing different images depending on the viewer's position, while monumental suspended linen drapes weave through two levels of the gallery, filtering natural light and creating an ever-changing atmosphere. These interventions encourage visitors to slow their pace, observe carefully, and experience architecture as something that unfolds gradually through movement and time.
Material selection became central to the project's narrative. Concrete, linen, cedar, brass, leather, and stone were chosen not only for their physical properties but for the emotional and sensory qualities they evoke. Influenced by Peter Zumthor's understanding of atmosphere and Hubert Damisch's writings on architecture as vessel, the project explores how materials can carry memory, ritual, and cultural meaning. Every surface, shadow, and detail contributes to an environment that invites contemplation and human connection.
At its heart, Te Umu Wairua asks whether architecture can hold spirit. It proposes that buildings are capable of doing more than accommodating occupation; they can become places of encounter, generosity, and remembrance. As my final undergraduate project, it represents the culmination of my evolving design philosophy, one that views architecture not as an object to be admired, but as a living experience shaped by light, material, story, and the people who move through it.

Te Umu Wairua
Immersive Installation | Exhibition Design
Developed alongside my final-year capstone, Te Umu Wairua, this immersive installation was designed to translate the project's architectural narrative into a tangible, human-scale experience. Rather than representing the building through conventional models or drawings alone, the installation invited visitors to physically engage with the concepts of light, materiality, and wairua, offering a glimpse into the atmosphere that defines the architectural proposal.
The installation explored how architecture can communicate beyond built form. Layers of suspended linen, carefully considered lighting, and a restrained material palette created an environment that encouraged movement, reflection, and quiet contemplation. As visitors navigated around and through the installation, shifting perspectives revealed changing relationships between shadow, transparency, and form, reinforcing the project's central themes of encounter, generosity, and spiritual connection.
Designed as both a presentation piece for my final capstone examination and a standalone exhibition, the installation investigated the role of atmosphere as an architectural medium. Every element was carefully composed to evoke the sensory qualities of the proposed gallery, demonstrating how material, light, and spatial composition can communicate narrative without relying solely on conventional architectural representation.
Following my final presentation, the installation was selected for public exhibition, allowing Te Umu Wairua to be experienced by a wider audience beyond the academic setting. The exhibition recognised the project's ability to communicate complex architectural ideas through immersive spatial storytelling, reinforcing my belief that architecture extends beyond buildings to become an experience that engages, inspires, and connects people.

Geo'Minds
Imagination Made Tangible
Geo'minds reimagines the early childhood learning environment through the lens of imagination, adaptability, and human-centred design. Situated within the existing AUT Early Childhood Centre, the project explores how architecture can encourage curiosity rather than prescribe behaviour, creating spaces that evolve alongside the children who inhabit them. Inspired by the simplicity of wooden building blocks, the design investigates how a single family of geometric forms can generate an entire architectural language.
The project began with careful observation of children's play, recognising that imagination does not rely on highly defined objects but on forms that remain open to interpretation. This principle informed every aspect of the design, from adaptable walls and interactive learning spaces to furniture, cabinetry, lighting, and playful architectural details. Rather than separating architecture from furniture, both emerge from the same generative geometry, creating a cohesive environment where every element encourages exploration and creativity.
Existing structural columns were transformed into anchors for movement and change, supporting retractable wall systems that allow classrooms to expand, contract, and adapt throughout the day. Above, a sculptural roof canopy extends beyond the building envelope, dissolving the threshold between indoor and outdoor learning while establishing a strong architectural identity. Materials including Accoya timber, recycled wool, bio-leather, and brass were selected for their durability, warmth, and tactile qualities, creating spaces that invite touch, comfort, and long-term use.
Influenced by the human-centred thinking of Don Norman and the playful spatial philosophies of Xin Cheng and Carme Pinós, Geo'minds investigates architecture as an invitation rather than an instruction. The project reflects my belief that the most meaningful learning environments are those that encourage children to question, adapt, and imagine freely, allowing architecture to become an active participant in discovery rather than a passive backdrop for education.

The Bind
Bound by Story
The Bind explores the meaning of home through the metaphor of bookbinding, where individual pages, materials, and threads are brought together to create a unified whole. Situated within Matariki Forest, the project proposes a permanent dwelling that binds architecture, landscape, and inhabitant into a single narrative, transforming the act of living into one of connection, care, and continuity.
The design was developed through a deeply personal exploration of storytelling and ritual. Inspired by my lifelong love of books, the house becomes more than a place of shelter; it becomes a vessel that holds memories, relationships, and everyday experiences. Each space unfolds as a chapter, connected through filtered light, tactile materiality, and carefully considered moments of pause and reflection.
Environmental responsibility forms an integral part of the proposal. Sustainably sourced timber, bio-based materials, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and integrated food-growing systems establish a dwelling capable of supporting both its inhabitants and the surrounding ecosystem. Multifunctional furniture, including transformable seating and foldable workspaces, allows the compact interior to adapt to changing needs without compromising comfort or spatial quality.
Throughout the project, architecture is treated as an extension of the forest itself. Light filters through timber screens like sunlight passing between trees, while natural materials gradually weather and record the passage of time. The Bind ultimately proposes that a home should not simply occupy the landscape but grow alongside it, fostering a reciprocal relationship between people, place, and the stories that shape both.

Hauhake Hive
The Hive of Harvesting
Hauhake Hive is a shared māra and community amenity that explores architecture as a catalyst for collective wellbeing, environmental stewardship, and cultural connection. Developed as part of a collaborative design project, the proposal responds to the idea that communal spaces should do more than provide function; they should cultivate relationships between people, place, and the natural systems that sustain them. Rather than designing a conventional community building, we envisioned an environment where growing, harvesting, learning, and gathering become part of everyday life.
Rooted in the principles of Rongoā Māori, the project celebrates native planting and traditional medicinal knowledge through a productive landscape of kawakawa, harakeke, mānuka, lavender, mint, and tea tree. These species support biodiversity while creating opportunities for harvesting, drying, and preparing herbal remedies and teas. The māra becomes a living classroom, encouraging shared learning through workshops, collective gardening, and intergenerational knowledge exchange.
Materially, the architecture seeks to dissolve the boundary between building and landscape. Warm timber cladding, reclaimed beech, stone flooring, and a living green roof create an environment that feels embedded within the whenua rather than placed upon it. Large folding doors and filtered light strengthen the relationship between interior and exterior, allowing seasonal change to become part of the spatial experience. Every material was selected to reinforce a sense of warmth, longevity, and ecological responsibility.
Beyond its physical form, Hauhake Hive proposes a way of living grounded in reciprocity. Rituals such as gathering for tea, sharing kai, and offering karakia before harvesting become integral to the architectural experience, recognising that wellbeing extends beyond the individual to include community, culture, and the environment. The project reflects my growing interest in designing spaces that nurture both people and ecosystems, where architecture supports connection rather than simply providing shelter.

The Six
Jewellery Studio & Retail Experience
The Six investigates how geometry can shape both architecture and human experience through the design of a contemporary jewellery studio and retail environment located on Cross Street in Auckland's creative district. The project draws inspiration from the precision and ornamentation of the Art Deco movement, reinterpreting its visual language through fractal geometry and generative design systems to create a cohesive spatial experience.
The concept is founded upon six geometric patterns developed through an iterative process of drawing, abstraction, and refinement. These patterns became the project's architectural vocabulary, informing everything from floor finishes and lighting to furniture, display systems, and circulation. Rather than acting as decoration, ornament becomes structure, generating relationships between objects, surfaces, and movement throughout the building.
A sculptural spiral staircase forms the conceptual and physical centre of the project, connecting the building's multiple levels while acting as an immersive installation in its own right. Visitors are naturally drawn towards this central element, where carefully positioned display cases, layered materials, and framed views encourage exploration and discovery. The experience unfolds as a continuous sequence, revealing new perspectives with every movement through the space.
Influenced by precedents such as Amano Britomart and the enduring legacy of Art Deco craftsmanship, The Six examines how repetition, symmetry, and proportion can establish both identity and atmosphere. Rather than separating retail from experience, the project positions jewellery as part of a larger architectural narrative, where every detail contributes to a unified language of elegance, precision, and spatial rhythm.

EroWave
Bathhouse of Erosion
EroWave explores the relationship between water, landscape, and architecture through the design of a contemporary bathhouse inspired by the buried Waihorotiu Stream of Tāmaki Makaurau. Once a defining natural feature of Auckland, the stream now exists largely beneath the city, its presence hidden yet still deeply embedded within the site's history. This project sought to reveal that forgotten landscape by translating the natural process of erosion into spatial experience.
Rather than treating erosion as an act of destruction, I approached it as a process of continual transformation. Just as water slowly shapes rock over time, the architecture is carved through movement, creating a sequence of spaces that gradually unfold from moments of enclosure into openness. Curved forms, softened thresholds, and fluid circulation encourage visitors to move intuitively through the bathhouse, mirroring the rhythm and direction of flowing water.
Materiality became an extension of this narrative. Weathering corten steel references the gradual passage of time, celebrating natural ageing rather than resisting it, while walnut and oak introduce warmth and tactility throughout the interior. Stone anchors the experience, reinforcing a sense of permanence and grounding. At the heart of the building, a cascading water installation acts as both a sensory focal point and a reminder of water's enduring ability to shape both landscape and memory.
The bathhouse is conceived as a place of restoration, where architecture encourages visitors to disconnect from the surrounding urban environment and reconnect with natural processes. Rather than recreating the lost stream, EroWave reinterprets its presence through atmosphere, movement, and material expression, demonstrating how architecture can preserve forgotten histories while creating meaningful contemporary experiences.

Die Kraak'
The Crack | Immersive Installation Garden
Die Kraak (The Crack) was my first university project and marked the beginning of my exploration into architecture as a medium for storytelling. Rather than viewing imperfections as elements to conceal, I became fascinated by the possibility that they could reveal something more meaningful. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi, where broken ceramics are repaired with gold to celebrate rather than disguise their fractures, I began to question how architecture might also embrace damage, resilience, and repair as acts of beauty.
Situated within a transitional public space in Tāmaki Makaurau, the installation reimagines a fracture in an existing retaining wall as an immersive spatial experience. What initially appears as a simple crack gradually reveals a hidden garden, where filtered light and native planting emerge from within the wall itself. The intervention encourages visitors to slow their pace, pause, and reconsider what often goes unnoticed, transforming an ordinary passage into a moment of reflection.
Light became the project's primary narrative device. Designed to move with the body, it traces the fracture through the wall, echoing the unpredictable paths created by cracks as they form. Rather than functioning solely as illumination, the light symbolises the gold within Kintsugi, quietly celebrating imperfection and revealing the hidden qualities of the space. Native planting, including kawakawa, bird's nest fern, hosta, and baby’s tears, softens the intervention while reinforcing the idea that new life often emerges through moments of disruption.
Environmental responsibility was integrated into the proposal through a passive rainwater harvesting system concealed within the wall. Rainwater is collected, filtered, and redistributed to irrigate the planting, allowing the installation to respond naturally to Auckland's changing climate while maintaining a healthy and self-sustaining landscape.
Although this was my first architectural project, Die Kraak established themes that continue to underpin my work today: material honesty, sensory experience, sustainability, and the belief that architecture has the ability to reveal beauty within the overlooked. It became the foundation of a design philosophy centred on creating spaces that invite reflection, celebrate imperfection, and encourage a deeper connection between people and place.
