ABOUT

Nicole Cherize Kotze

My Design Philosophy

I believe architecture is more than the creation of buildings; it is the creation of meaningful experiences. At its best, design has the ability to connect people to place, culture, memory, and one another. It can shape how we feel, how we gather, how we learn, and how we move through the world.

My approach is grounded in human-centred design. I begin each project by listening, to people, to stories, to context, and to the subtle rituals that shape everyday life. Through research, observation, and making, I seek to understand not only what a space needs to do, but how it should feel. I believe the most successful environments are those that support wellbeing, foster connection, and create a sense of belonging.

Across my work, I am drawn to the relationship between narrative and architecture. Whether inspired by ecological systems, cultural histories, community values, or personal stories, I use design as a way of translating ideas into spatial experiences. I am interested in how architecture can reveal meaning through light, material, movement, and atmosphere, creating spaces that are both functional and emotionally resonant.

Materiality plays a fundamental role in my design process. I am fascinated by the way materials weather, age, and carry memory over time. Through thoughtful selection and detailing, I aim to create environments that are tactile, authentic, and enduring. Every material is considered not only for its performance, but for the story it contributes to the overall experience of a place.

Sustainability, for me, is an extension of care. It is not simply about environmental performance, but about designing responsibly for people, communities, and future generations. I believe architecture should work in partnership with its environment, responding sensitively to ecological systems while creating resilient and adaptable spaces that can evolve over time.

Throughout my practice, I continually return to the idea of connection. Connection between people and place. Between culture and community. Between the built and natural environment. My work seeks to strengthen these relationships through thoughtful, research-led design that is both grounded and imaginative.

As I continue my journey in architecture, I aspire to create spaces that listen before they speak, spaces that hold story, invite encounter, and leave a lasting impact long after they have been experienced.
